Message of Peace Amid Global Unrest: ‘Devi on Canvas’ Exhibition Draws Massive Crowds

Screen N Stagez Report:
At a time when the world is witnessing unrest and conflict, a unique art exhibition titled “Devi on Canvas” was organized in Kolkata to spread a message of peace and humanity through artistic expression. Hosted by Bengal Creative Club at the ICCR Nandalal Bose Art Gallery, Kolkata, the three-day exhibition (March 27, 28, and 29) has already received an overwhelming response from art lovers. The exhibition was inaugurated on March 27 at 5 PM.

A total of 76 artists participated in the exhibition. Through paintings, sculptures, and photography, the artists presented profound expressions of Devi Shakti, humanity, and spirituality. Each artwork reflected the individual emotions, perspectives, and interpretations of the artists.

The exhibition was conceptualized and executed under the leadership of Bengal Creative Club President Surath Chakraborty and Brand Ambassador Sarmistha Roy Chowdhury. Under their initiative, in 2024 and 2025, a pioneering international exhibition was organized featuring over a hundred aesthetic nude artworks centered around a single model, Sarmistha Roy Chowdhury. This initiative set a unique global benchmark. Continuing that legacy, this year’s “Devi on Canvas” marks the next chapter of that creative journey.

A special highlight of the exhibition was the felicitation of traditional artisans from Kumartuli, whose craftsmanship continues to carry the legacy of divine feminine worship across the world.

The inauguration ceremony held special significance as it was conducted by representatives from different religions. Representatives from Hindu, Muslim, Christian, and Buddhist communities jointly inaugurated the exhibition, conveying a strong message of interfaith harmony and social unity.

Distinguished personalities at the inauguration included:
Bishop Dr. Srikanta Das, Founder of Good News Mission of India and Convenor of the Christian Minority Cell;
Piyal Adhikary, Secretary of Mahesh Jagannath Temple and Founder of Mahesh Jagannath Development Trust;
Ven. Bhikkhu Biswajit, Buddhist monk and Assistant Secretary of Badodha Dharmankur Sabha, India;
and Md. Ehteshamul Haque Siddiqui (Minority Cell, Trinamool Organisation).

The event was also graced by noted Eminent journalist Ritabrata Bhattacharya, great-grandson of Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar Mahasaya and President of “Mission Vidyasagar” Amitabh Banerjee were present as special guests at the event. Eminent Tollywood director and actor Anindya Sarkar, tabla player Mallar Ghosh along with other personalities from the film industry, educationists and prominent people of the society were present, which further enhanced the prestige of the event.

Two prominent potters of Kumartuli were felicitated – Shri Jagadish Dutt and Shri Bankim Pal. Since Goddess is worshipped all over the world through these Kumartuli potters, they were honored by the Bengal Pottery Club.

The exhibition witnessed an overwhelming footfall, with crowds so large that managing them became a challenge—something rarely seen in art exhibitions, highlighting its immense popularity.

Alongside renowned senior artists, works by emerging artists also attracted significant attention. Their fresh ideas and creative perspectives left a strong impression on visitors.

Speaking on the occasion, Surath Chakraborty said,
“Since 2005, we have been working towards bringing positive change in society through innovative ideas. In the current global situation, we hope our message of peace will have a meaningful impact.”

Sarmistha Roy Chowdhury added,
“At a time when realistic art is gradually fading in India, Bengal Creative Club is working to revive it. This year’s theme, ‘Devi Shakti,’ is an effort to invoke positive energy.”

According to the organizers, the primary objective of the exhibition is to promote peace, empathy, and humanity. Through their works, the artists have reflected the present global unrest while also exploring pathways toward harmony.

The exhibition venue remained vibrant with visitors of all age groups. Much like the anticipation that follows the end of Durga Puja, both visitors and artists are now eagerly looking forward to experiencing “Devi on Canvas” once again.
