Stepped-Up Russian Assaults Target Southwestern and Western Ukraine

At least two people were killed and 20 others injured as Russian forces launched a fresh wave of drone and missile attacks across Ukraine overnight into Saturday, July 12, 2025, according to Ukrainian regional officials.
In the southwestern Chernivtsi region, four drones and one missile struck the Bukovina area, resulting in the deaths of two civilians and injuring 14 others. Regional Governor Ruslan Zaparaniuk confirmed the fatalities were caused by falling drone debris, highlighting the continued threat to civilian lives even from intercepted or damaged drones.
Simultaneously, six people were reported injured in Ukraine’s western Lviv region following a drone strike. Governor Maksym Kozytskyi said emergency services were working to assess damage and assist the wounded.
These latest attacks come amid a renewed Russian bombing campaign involving hundreds of drones, escalating the ongoing conflict that has now entered its fourth year. Military analysts believe the intensified assaults are aimed at breaking Ukrainian defense lines and disrupting civilian morale as international peace efforts remain stalled.
The Ukrainian Air Force reported that it had intercepted several incoming drones during the night but warned of continued high-alert conditions across the country. Infrastructure, residential zones, and public services continue to be key targets in Russia’s expanding aerial strategy.
The growing frequency and intensity of Russian strikes are drawing increased global concern, especially as the attacks spread to previously less-targeted western and southwestern regions of Ukraine.
As the war drags on, Ukrainian officials continue to call for greater international support, including advanced air defense systems, to counter Russia’s relentless drone and missile onslaught.
